Rohit Sharma's failed performance in the home series against New Zealand has disappointed the entire country. With the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024 starting within 20 days, Rohit's form has been a major concern since he's the team's captain and the opening batter. Apart from that, BGT is important from the perspective of the WTC 2025 finals as well. Amidst the ongoing outrage among fans and experts, reports are surfacing over the internet suggesting Rohit Sharma's absence from the first Test match against Australia in Perth.

During the press conference, Rohit did give a slight hint about his absence by saying, "Not sure whether I will be going. Fingers crosses." This statement infuriated the former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar, who urged the selectors to sack Rohit from captaincy. He had a valid point that missing one match leads to missing another, and the deputy appointed will have to unnecessarily soak in a lot of added pressure.

Sunil Gavaskar said, "It is important for the captain to play the first Test. If he gets injured, then it is a different matter. In such a situation, if your leader is not available in the first match, then appointing a deputy leader, the pressure that builds on him is a different kind of pressure. We have been reading that Rohit Sharma will not play in the first Test, perhaps he will not play in the second as well. If this is the case, then I say that right now, the Indian selection committee should say that you have to rest, rest, if there are personal reasons, then look at them."

We will make the vice-captain the captain of this tour: Sunil Gavaskar

India have suffered a terrible loss against New Zealand in the Test series, which isn't acceptable at all. To avoid the same mistakes, the Board will have to talk to players before they leave for Australia. On Rohit Sharma's absence, Sunil Gavaskar suggested that he travel to Australia as a player, not as a captain, since he will miss out on the first game.

"But if you are missing two-thirds of the matches then you should go for this tour only as a player. We will make the vice-captain the captain of this tour. Because there should be clarity. It is the responsibility of the captain because when we lost 3-0 here, it is important to have a captain. Absolutely necessary," said Sunil Gavaskar.
