T20 World Cup: Spirited Sri Lanka trounce hapless Netherlands by 83-runs to end tournament on high note

Sri Lanka end their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign on a high with an 83-run win over Netherlands in St. Lucia on Sunday to end the proceedings from Group D.

Group D matches of the T20 World Cup finally ended on Sunday evening. Sri Lanka and Netherlands played their final match of the campaign in St Lucia. In the end the Sri Lankans won the match by 83-runs to end their campaign on a high and pocket their first win. 

In the earlier game, Bangladesh had defeated Nepal by 21-runs to go 2nd in Group D standings. This enabled the Bangladeshi side to punch their ticket to the next phase of the T20 World Cup 2024 campaign. 

South Africa ended as the table toppers having won all their 4 games from Group D. Netherlands on the other hand ended their tournament with just 2 points from 4 games with their sole win coming against Nepal. 

Sri Lankan batters make merry in massive win over Netherlands 

Scott Edwards the Dutch skipper won the toss and chose to bowl first. There was immediate reward as Vivian Kingma got the wicket of Pathum Nissanka in the 2nd ball of the 1st over. Kamindu Mendis scored 17 off 20 balls before he was out to Paul Van Meekeren.

Kusal Mendis was out for 46 which was the joint top score for Sri Lanka after adding 45 runs for the 3rd wicket with Dhananjaya De Silva. The Sri Lankans made merry on a flat batting wicket as they scored a huge 201 on the board. 

Charith Asalanka smashed his way to 46 off 21 balls while Dhananjaya De Silva scored 34 off 26 balls. Veteran star Angelo Mathews was not out on 30 off 15 balls while skipper Wanindu Hasaranga scored a quick 20 not out from 6 balls. 

Michael Levitt and Max O Dowd began well for the Dutch side as they took the attack to the Lankan bowlers. The openers added 45 runs for the first wicket in 4.3 overs before Nuwan Thushara dismissed O Dowd for 11. 

From there it was a constant procession of wickets as the Lankan bowlers kept pegging back the Dutch batting unit. Skipper Scott Edwards and Michael Levitt were the joint top scorers with 31 each. 

Nuwan Thushara was the best bowler for Sri Lanka with 3/24 as Wanindu Hasaranga and Matheesha Pathirana picked two wickets each. In the end Sri Lanka won the match by 83 runs and have already qualified for the next event in 2026 as they are the co-hosting the event with India.
