Bangladesh began their T20 World Cup campaign with a close two-wicket win over Sri Lanka. The pulsating encounter saw veteran batter Mahmudullah keep his cool and help his team over the line with an over to spare.

With this loss, Sri Lanka has now lost their second game of the T20 World Cup. Wanindu Hasaranga and his men had begun with a loss to South Africa in their opening match by 6 wickets after being bowled out for 77.

It was Bangladesh who won the toss and chose to bowl first. Sri Lanka could only manage 124/9 on the board with Pathum Nissanka top-scoring with 47. Rishad Hossain and Mustafizur Rahman were the best bowlers for Bangladesh picking 3 wickets each.

Bangladesh cross the line with a close win

Needing 125 runs to win their first game of the T20 World Cup, Bangladesh began poorly. Soumya Sarkar was out for a duck while Tanzid Hasan was out for 2 to leave Bangladesh on 6/2. Litton Das finally found some form as he added 21 runs for the 3rd with Najmul Shanto before the Bangladeshi skipper perished for 7.

Towhid Hridoy joined Litton Das as the pair added 63 runs for the 4th wicket. Hridoy hit Hasaranga for three successive sixes before falling LBW to the Sri Lankan skipper. The right-handed batter scored 40 runs from 20 balls with 1 boundary and four huge sixes.

After 8 runs later, Hasaranga struck again when he had Litton Das out LBW for 36. Matheesha Pathirana then struck a huge blow and got the wicket of Shakib AL Hasan for 8. Nuwan Thushara got Sri Lanka back into the contest with two wickets off successive balls.

Sri Lankan pacer first got Rishad Hossain bowled for 1 and followed it up with the wicket of Taskin Ahmed for a duck. Suddenly the Sri Lankans were back in the game as Bangladesh needed 12 runs from 14 balls.

The 19th over was given to Dasun Shanka who saw Mahmudullah smash him for a huge six to bring the scores closer. The winning hit came as the veteran batter Mahmudullah took two runs to effectively end Sri Lanka’s hope of making it to the Super 8 stages.
