Rashid Khan and his Afghanistan have secured their place in the Super-8 stages of the T20 World Cup. The 7-wicket win over Papua New Guinea at the Brian Lara Cricket Stadium in Trinidad also meant that New Zealand are now out of the tournament.

It was Rashid Khan who won the toss and chose to bowl first. Fazalhaq Farooqi continued his good form with the ball and picked 3 wickets early. Papua New Guinea were bowled out for a mere 95 in the 20th over.

Afghanistan made little work of the chase as they got home with 7 wickets in hand and 29 balls left to play. Gulbadin Naib was the best batter as he was not out on 49 runs from 34 balls with four boundaries and two sixes.

Afghanistan knocks out New Zealand with easy win over PNG

It was a great day for Afghanistan cricket as they made it through to the Super-8 stages of the T20 World Cup. That win meant that Rashid Khan and his side are now top of the table with one final match in Group C left to be played.

Afghanistan had started their World Cup with a massive win over Uganda by 125 runs. This was followed by a thumping win over New Zealand by 84 runs to put themselves in the drivers seat. The Afghans will now take on West Indies and the winner of that match will face India in the Super 8 match in Barbados.

After putting Papua New Guinea into bat, Afghanistan bowlers did the trick to bowl them out for a mere 95. At one stage, PNG were 17/4 with Fazalhaq Farooqi yet again doing the damage with the new ball. Tony Ura finally put up a decent performance with the bat scoring 11 off 18 balls.

Kiplin Doriga was the best batter scoring 27 runs while Farooqi ended the day with figures of 3/16 from 4 overs. Naveen-ul-Haq was the next best bowler with 2/4 from 2.5 overs which included the wicket of Tony Ura.

Chasing 96 to win, Semo Kamaea delivered the early blow when he bowled Ibrahim Zadran for a duck. Alei Nao then got the key wicket of Rahmanullah Gurbaz for 11 as Norman Vanua dismissed Azmatullah Omarzai for 13. The win came when Naib hit Chad Soper for a huge six in the first ball of the 16th over.
