South Africa's bowling attack outplayed the Sri Lankan batters in the 1st Test match at Kingsmead, Durban. Marco Jansen's deliveries were unplayable, which led to a massive collapse of the Lankan batting lineup. In just 42 runs, the entire team was dismissed and sent back to the pavilion. Jansen bowled from one end, making sure to get the most out of the conditions. The new ball helped the Rabada-Jansen pair to take wickets at regular intervals. Jansen was getting the extra bounce which helped him a lot throughout the innings.
In just 83 balls, the Sri Lankan innings came to an end. They became the second team to take least balls in an innings (83) to get all-out in a Test match. This was a humiliating performance by the Lankan Lions who were magnificent in their own home ground, beating New Zealand. However, things changed and now Sri Lanka are struggling to gain momentum in the match.
The pitch might be blamed too as South Africa were bowled out for just 191 runs in the first innings. For Sri Lanka, Asitha Fernando and Lahiru Kumara claimed three wickets each. Except for Temba Bhavuma, no other batter could face the wrath of the bowlers from both teams. Bhavuma, however, scored 70 runs in 117 balls, hitting nine boundaries and one six. Kamindu Mendis (13) was the highest scorer for Sri Lanka.
Marco Jansen registers third-best bowling figure for South African pacer at home
The pace bowler of South Africa, Marco Jansen became a walking nightmare for the Sri Lankan batters as he claimed seven wickets in the ongoing Test match. He dismissed most of the batters and registered the third best bowling figure by a South African pacer at home and the best bowling figures by a South African pacer in this century. This is a huge record to hold at the age of 24.
With that, Sri Lanka became the second team to be bowled out in less balls (83). Before them it was South Africa who were bowled out in 75 balls against England in 1924. The visitors will take some time to get over this humiliation. However, they still have a chance to win the game if they do the same thing with South Africa.
