Aiden Markram-led South Africa is currently in a golden run of form in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024. The Proteas have won 5 consecutive matches in the 5 matches they have played so far in the tournament. The list of these matches includes the four matches in the group stage followed by a win in the super-8 stage against the USA.

Notably, South Africa have always been dubbed as one of the strongest teams in the tournament They have never failed to show their immense class in the tournament but still, the first-ever trophy for the Proteas is awaited in the history of the ICC T20 World Cup since its inception in 2007.

Having said that, here we’ll have a look at the journey and track record of South Africa in the super-8 stage of the tournament. Interestingly, the format of the T20 World Cup has included the super-8 stage in the first four editions, including 2007, 2009, 2010, and 2012, followed by the current edition.

Here’s a look at the performance of South Africa in the super-8 stage of the T20 World Cup:

2007 – Failed to reach the Semi-Finals

It was the first-ever edition of the T20 World Cup when South Africa themselves were the hosts of the tournament. South Africa made it to the super-8 stage of the inaugural edition of the tournament, where they faced England, India and New Zealand.

The Proteas could win only one match in the super-8 stage with two defeats, including a loss in the all-important and must-win game against India, which included the half-century from the current India skipper Rohit Sharma. Eventually, SA failed to make it to the semi-finals of the tournament and were knocked from the tournament.

2009 – Qualified for Semi-Finals

South Africa enjoyed an amazing run of form in the T20 World Cup 2009 as they made it to the super-8 stage after consecutive wins in the group stage. Later in the super-8 stage, they registered 3 successive wins against India, West Indies, and England.

On the back of this amazing performance, SA made it to the semi-final of the tournament, where they lost to the eventual champions Pakistan by a narrow margin of 5 runs to get eliminated from the tournament.

2010 – Failed to reach the Semi-Finals

The third edition of the T20 World Cup was played in the Caribbean where the proteas had another good season considering their form in the group stage of the tournament. The semi-finalists just in the previous ‘2009 edition’ before the 2010 World T20, made it to the super-8 stage of the tournament for the third consecutive time.

South Africa could win only 1 game in the three matches they played in the super-8 stage of the tournament while losing two games. It ensured their elimination from the tournament from the super-8 stage of the tournament.

2012 – Failed to reach the Semi-Finals

Sri Lanka were hosting the fourth edition of the marquee international tournament; in this edition of the tournament, South Africa once again performed brilliantly in the group stage of the tournament but they drastically failed in the super-8 stage of the tournament.

The Proteas lost all of their 3 matches in the super-8 stage of the tournament and got eliminated from the tournament straightaway from the super-8 stage.
