Following India's dominant performance on the first day of the first Test match against England at Headingley, Indian greats Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly had a sentimental and humorous social media conversation. Having a new lineup and without the expertise of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, India ended Day 1 of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at 359 for 3.

Shubman Gill is unbeaten at 127, Rishabh Pant added a smooth 65*, and Yashasvi Jaiswal struck 101 to put the visitors in command. Rahul Dravid (148), Sourav Ganguly (128) and Sachin Tendulkar (193) all achieved three figures in a commanding first innings during the historic 2002 Headingley Test, which Tendulkar compared to the youthful pair's hundreds.

India scored a historic innings and won by 46 runs in that unforgettable match, posting a massive total. The pitch this year was more batting-friendly than in 2002, Ganguly said in a light-hearted way, implying that India would finish up with four centurions. As potential additions to the list, he mentioned Karun Nair and Pant. "Hi, Champ, this time it could be 4... on this good surface... Pant and maybe Karun... the surface on day 1 in 2002 was a bit different than this," he wrote, suggesting more centuries could be on the cards this time around.

Supporters praised the two former captains' friendship and celebrated the interaction right away. The famous 249-run stand that Tendulkar and Ganguly enjoyed at the same location 22 years ago, with Sanjay Bangar's 68 at the top and Dravid's tough tonne providing the foundation for one of India's greatest victories abroad, was also recalled by many.

Rishabh Pant put India in good position

As the game progressed, India's top order took advantage of favourable circumstances. The Indian hitters replied with calm and authority to England's decision to bowl first under clear skies, based on recent history that indicated the team bowling first had won each of the previous six Test matches at Headingley. Throughout the last session, Pant pushed the scoring pace and attacked England's bowlers. India was well positioned to achieve a massive total at stumps, and England's choice to bowl was already being questioned.

On Friday, the Headingley pitch looked level and true, enabling the hitters to settle down, not like the surface in 2002, which provided early aid to the seamers. With more batting to come, the visitors will want to continue their domination on Day 2, which was dominated by India's young players.
