Former India skipper Sourav Ganguly has taken a huge swipe at his critics for giving captaincy to Rohit Sharma. Sourav Ganguly who was then the BCCI chief had decided to hand over the captaincy to Rohit Sharma after the 2021 T20I World Cup debacle. This didn’t sit well with certain quarters, especially with many Virat Kohli fans.

Sourav Ganguly while speaking to Bengali newspaper Aajkal said, “When I handed Rohit Sharma the captaincy of the Indian team, everyone criticised me”. There were rumors that Sourav Ganguly and Virat Kohli weren’t seeing eye-to-eye. Virat Kohli also quit the ODI captaincy and the Test captaincy in early 2022 after the South African tour.

Rohit Sharma finally ended the drought for an ICC title when he led India to the T20 World Cup title. India beat South Africa by 7 runs to win their second T20 World Cup and ended their 11-year wait for a huge title.

Speaking to Aajkal the former Indian skipper also said, “Now that India has won the T20 World Cup under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, everyone has stopped abusing me for it. In fact, I think everyone has forgotten that it was I who appointed him as the captain of the Indian team”

Sourav Ganguly also confirmed on Saturday that Ricky Ponting had parted ways with Delhi Capitals as the coach. The former India skipper also said that he would be the coach for the next season and hoped to do well.

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have already announced their retirement from the T20I format. The two had taken this decision the same day India won the T20 World Cup and this was followed by Ravindra Jadeja following his teammates in bidding goodbye to the format.

After the Zimbabwe tour, Team India are set to travel to Sri Lanka with Gautam Gambhir at the saddle as the coach. The team is set to be picked in the coming week as Gambhir will meet Ajit Agarkar as Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul are slated to be named as captains of the two squads.
