When asked about his elevation to the deputy role, Axar said “Vice-captaincy comes with added responsibility. Sometimes we have to take harsh decisions and give honest opinions”. The 31-year-old also mentioned that he has discussed with coach Gautam Gambhir and T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav.

Mohammed Shami has been in the news after the veteran pacer was recalled to the side for the home series against England. The 34-year-old is also set to take part in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy. Shami will play for India for the first time since November 2023 after which injuries had forced him to take a long lay-off.

While speaking to the media about veteran pacer Mohammed Shami, newly elected vice-captain Axar Patel said “Shami returning is very positive. He was very good in Syed Mushtaq Ali and Vijay Hazare Trophy. We know what he brings with the new ball and death. It's a really good sign for us and we hope he continues what he did in the World Cup”

The 31-year-old also while speaking about his form said “I have played all three formats. I know what I can do and what my strengths are. I just focus on what I can do. I don't think much when I am not picked or don't play. My focus remains on what I can contribute when I play and when I don't”

During his interaction with the media, Axar mentioned that Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson have sealed their spot as openers. In fact, the batting order is set to be the same that was seen during the series against Bangladesh and South Africa. The 31-year-old also didn’t comment much on the likely support staff changes after the tour of Australia.
