The schedule for the third season of the South African T20 league SA20 has been announced for the 2025 season. Sunrisers Eastern Cape will start the tournament against Cape Town Mumbai Indians in the opening game of the season.

The season is set to begin on the 9th of January 2025 with the final league match to be played on 2nd February. The final league phase match will witness Mumbai Indians Cape Town take on the Pretoria Capitals.

Former Indian cricket star Dinesh Karthik is set to play for the Paarl Royals. Big-name stars like Joe Root and Kane Williamson have also signed up marking their first-ever appearance in the league.

SA20’s new season to usher in new excitement

Graeme Smith, who is the commissioner of the league, released a statement which read, “We're thrilled to start the season in Gqeberha with our defending champions and look forward to an action-packed summer of cricket. As we welcome international talent to the roaring pool of local stars, we aim to deliver an unforgettable experience for both players and fans alike."

The former South African star also said that there will be a developmental scheme in place during the season. The tournament has been called Schools SA20 and it hopes to bring the next big talents to South Africa.

Graeme Smith said, “Schools SA20 is more than just a competition. It has the potential to significantly contribute to our cricketing future. There are a number of Protea men and women who made a mark at the school level.”

“I can't wait to see the next generation entertaining and showcasing their skills on this global stage and no doubt the next teenage cricket sensation will announce themselves to the world out of this competition,” said Smith.

The first edition of the tournament was played in 2023 with 6 teams in the fray. Sunrisers Eastern Cape are the defending champions having won the title in both seasons. There is a strong IPL presence in the league.

Sunrisers Group owns the Eastern Cape Franchise. Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings own Cape Town and Johannesburg. The GMR group owns Pretoria while the Royals and RPG groups own Paarl and Durban respectively.
