The English batter went past Rahul Dravid and Jacques Kallis in the elite list during the first innings of the Manchester Test. He is now just 56 runs away from Ricky Ponting to get to the second spot, just behind Sachin Tendulkar in the longest format of the game.
Root batted well in the first innings of the Manchester Test against India and remained unbeaten at 63*(115) at the end of the first session on Day 3. In the process, he completed the milestone of scoring over 13300 runs in the longest format of the game. Root surpassed the likes of Dravid and Kallis, who were just a run apart from each other.

While Jacques Kallis had 13289 runs in 280 innings in Tests at an average of 55.37, including 45 tons and 58 fifty-plus scores, Dravid scored 13288 runs in 286 innings at an average of 52.31, including 36 tons and 63 fifty-plus scores. Root had long surpassed Alastair Cook to become England's leading run-scorer in Tests.
Joe Root closes in on Ricky Ponting and Sachin Tendulkar's Test numbers
Root is now just 56 runs behind Ricky Ponting to become the second-highest run-scorer in the red ball format. Before the second session of Day 3 of the Manchester Test, Root has 13332 runs in 286 innings, at an average of 51.02, including 37 tons and 67 fifty-plus scores.

On the other hand, Ponting has 13378 runs in 287 innings, at an average of 51.85, including 41 tons and 62 fifty-plus scores. Sachin Tendulkar remains firmly at the top in the list of top run getters in Tests with 15921 runs in 329 innings, at an average of 53.78, including 51 tons and 68 fifty-plus scores.
