In what seems to be a big piece of news for the cricket fans, India’s ODI skipper and the batting stalwart, Rohit Sharma, is set to undergo surgery on his left hamstring. The surgery is reported to be done after the conclusion of the ongoing Indian Premier League 2025. Notably, Rohit has been going through a hamstring concern for the last five years.

The T20 World Cup Champion skipper will now be playing for India only in the ODIs, as he has announced retirement from Tests and T20Is. It was last year, after India’s T20 World Cup 2024 win, when Rohit, alongside Kohli, announced their retirement from the T20Is.

In the same vein, both the stalwarts announced their retirement from the Tests earlier this month, within just five days. Rohit announced his retirement on May 7 with an Instagram story.

Now, Rohit Sharma’s focus is entirely shifted to ODI cricket, as fans are expecting his availability for India till the upcoming ODI World Cup 2027. So, the hamstring surgery seems inevitable for him to prolong his ODI career as he has already turned 38 last month on April 30.

“If Rohit wants to play the 2027 World Cup, this is the right time to get the surgery done. He has been putting it off for years because of leadership duties, but now the schedule allows him to recover without rushing back,” a source in the know said to the CricBlogger.

Currently, Rohit Sharma is in action for the Mumbai Indians in the ongoing IPL 2025, being the leading run-scorer for his side in the tournament. He has scored 305 runs in 12 innings, with an average of 27.72, hitting three half-centuries. After a dismal run of form with the bat in the starting phase of the tournament.
