The last date May 27, 2024, to apply for the position of Team India’s head coach has now ended and the discussions or assumptions have been ignited about who will succeed the current head coach Rahul Dravid to serve in ‘one of the toughest’ responsibilities in Indian cricket.

Meanwhile, recent media reports have learned that a discussion has taken place between Gautam Gambhir and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) regarding the ‘head coach’ role. The reported one-liner in this entire selection process is reported to be ‘desh ke liye karna hai (we must do it for a country).

“The former India cricketer, who mentored KKR's third title triumph this week, is considered a frontrunner for the post that is expected to be vacated by Rahul Dravid at the end of next month's World Cup,” reads a report in Cricbuzz.

“The buzzword inside the coach selection circle is 'desh ke liye karna hai'. Both the BCCI and Gambhir share the belief that 'we must do it for the country.' And the conversation between Jay Shah and Gambhir is understood to be centred around this idea,” the report adds further.

A successful journey for Gautam Gambhir as ‘mentor’ in IPL

Speaking of Gautam Gambhir’s journey in the last couple of years, he has achieved success as a mentor in the Indian Premier League since he took over the responsibility for the first time in the 2022 edition of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). Under Gambhir’s guidance, LSG made it to the playoff stage of the tournament consecutively in IPL 2022 and IPL 2023.

Later, Gambhir moved back to his old franchise Gautam Gambhir in the role of ‘mentor’ and achieved huge success as the team clinched the title under his mentorship; notably, it was the title KKR won in IPL history after a long wait of 10 years; last time when KKR lifted the title, Gambhir was there in the role of captain of the team and after 10 years,  the ‘Gambhir’ factor was there once again and now he was active in the role of mentor.
