Former India all-rounder and Dindigul Dragons’ skipper Ravichandran Ashwin faced a punishment for reacting angrily to the umpire’s decision in a TNPL game between the Dragons and the iDream Tiruppur Tamizhans in Coimbatore. It happened when on-field umpire Kritika raised her finger to declare Ashwin out off Sai Kishore’s delivery in the fifth over.

Subsequently, the veteran all-rounder was seen in a heated exchange of words with her; later, while walking back to the pavilion, Ashwin also smashed his bat into his pads out of anger and frustration.

However, the 38-year-old had to face a punishment as match referee Ram Kripal Singh slapped a fine of 30% of his match fees on him. The referee found Ashwin guilty of two offences, it included showing dissent towards the umpire and misuse of equipment.

He accepted the sanctions – TNPL official

A TNPL official told Cricbuzz, “There was a hearing conducted by the match referee after the game. Ashwin was fined 10 per cent for showing dissent towards the umpires and 20 per cent for misuse of equipment. He accepted the sanctions.”

Speaking of Ashwin, he was recently in action for Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League 2025, where he had a dismal season both with the bat and the ball. He could scalp only 7 wickets in nine innings, with an expensive economy rate of 9.12. On the other hand, he could score only 33 runs in four innings with a poor batting average of 8.25.

Ashwin is currently leading the Dindigul Dragons in the ongoing Tamil Nadu Premier League 2025 (TNPL 2025). He retired from international cricket last year on December 18, 2024, during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 between India and Australia. The off-spin great hung his boots after the third Test of the series ended in a draw in Brisbane.
