The Congress politician and spokesperson Shama Mohamed made controversial and derogatory comments about the Indian cricket team’s skipper, Rohit Sharma. She used terms like ‘fat’ and ‘unimpressive’ while sharing a post in which she criticized Rohit, which later faced a massive backlash from both politicians and former cricketers.
In the same line of events, the former legendary India cricketer and ex-skipper Sunil Gavaskar launched a brutal counter-attack on Shama Mohamed for her derogatory words about Rohit Sharma.

Gavaskar also defended Rohit Sharma’s fitness and recalled what he said about the young Mumbai batter Sarfaraz Khan in the past when he didn’t get selected in the national cricket team.
“I have always said, if you want only slim guys, then you should go to a modelling competition and pick all the models. It’s not about that. It’s about how well you can play cricket. We talked about Sarfaraz Khan—he was vilified for a long time because he was on the heavier side. But if he scores 150 for India in a Test match and follows it up with another two or three fifty-plus scores, then what’s the issue?” said Gavaskar to India Today.
“I don’t think size has anything to do with it. It’s your mental strength—whether you can last the distance—that’s the most important thing. Bat well, bat for long, and score runs,” he added later.
Notably, Rohit Sharma has been one of the most successful Indian captains in the major ICC tournaments. He has led the team in the knockouts of every ICC tournament since taking over the captaincy of the national cricket team, including the historic title win in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
Rohit’s captaincy also includes India’s appearances in the semifinal of the T20 World Cup 2022, the final of the World Test Championship 2023, the final of the ODI World Cup 2023, and now the semifinal of the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
