The 49th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 was played between the five-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Wednesday, May 1. The fans witnessed 3rd consecutive low scoring in 3 days as CSK were able to score only 162 runs in the first innings.
PBKS skipper Sam Curran won the toss and opted to bowl first on the spin-friendly pitch of Chepauk Stadium. CSK openers Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ajinkya Rahane provided a slow but steady start as they stitched a 64-run stand together for the first wicket. However, the introduction of the spin duo of Harpreet Brar and Rahul Chahar saw CSK losing wickets in quick succession.
Brar dismissed Rahane and the in-form batter Shivam Dube in the same over. Chahar also got a breakthrough by dismissing Ravindra Jadeja in the 10th over. However, skipper Gaikwad’s well-fought knock of 62 runs helped CSK to get a fighting total of 162 runs in 20 overs. Brar and Chahar were the star bowlers for PBKS as both of them got 2 wickets each without conceding a single boundary.
Brilliant batting display by PBKS' batters
Chasing the target, PBKS didn’t have a great start as they lost Prabhsimran Singh on the score of just 19 runs. However, Jonny Bairstow and Rilee Rossouw didn’t let the flow of runs stop and stitched a crucial 64-run stand for the 2nd wicket. But out of nowhere, skipper Gaikwad decided to introduce Shivam Dube and he didn’t let his skipper down as he dismissed the in-form Bairstow.
Rossouw played a brilliant inning of 43 runs which included 5 fours and 3 sixes. PBKS' best player of the ongoing season, Shashank Singh, displayed a different side of his gameplay as he scored 25 runs from 26 balls with only 1 four and as many sixes but made sure that the team chased the target easily. With this win, PBKS are now sitting in the 7th spot with 8 points in 10 matches while CSK are still at the 4th spot with 10 points in 10 matches.
