Sri Lanka strikes back after Rohit Sharma’s blazing fifty

Needing 231 runs to win, Rohit Sharma gave the team a blistering start with the bat. India’s skipper went after the Sri Lankan bowlers right from the word go. In just his second ball the Indian skipper danced down the track and hit Asitha Fernando for a huge six.

Shubman Gill on the other hand was his circumspect self as Rohit Sharma hit Fernando for yet another six. The veteran batter got to his 56th ODI fifty when he hit Akila Dhananjaya for a huge swept six.

Sri Lanka came back into the contest when Shubman Gill tried to slog sweep Wellage only to be caught by Kusal Mendis for 16. The opening stand was worth 75 runs and it came off just 12.4 overs.

India lost their second wicket when Rohit Sharma went for a sweep shot. Dunith Wellage had the Indian skipper struck on the pads and the umpire didn’t waste his time by lifting his finger. Rohit Sharma didn’t waste the review as he was out for 58 runs from 47 balls with 7 fours and 3 sixes.

Washington Sundar was sent to bat at number 4 and the left-handed batter hit a boundary before falling for five. Akila Dhanajaya got Sri Lanka’s third wicket of the day as the Indian batter had to go back to the hut. The men in blue reached their 100 in the 19th over when Shreyas Iyer hit a boundary to relive some pressure off their back.
