Kolkata Knight Riders were the team to beat during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season. Shreyas Iyer and Gautam Gambhir formed a deadly combination with coach Chandrakant Pandit and won the title by beating Sunrisers Hyderabad in the finals. This was the third title for KKR and their first in exactly a decade.
Gautam Gambhir has moved onto become India’s coach while Dwayne Bravo joins as the mentor. Shreyas Iyer was released by KKR at the end of the campaign in what was a huge move. Rinku Singh was retained for INR 13 Crores. The other players retained were spinner Varun Chakravarthy, Sunil Narine, Andre Russell.
Indian duo Harshit Rana and Ramandeep Singh were retained as uncapped players. Both stars had played a key role in KKR winning the title this year. This led to Ramandeep’s eventual debut for India in the T20I format during the recent tour of South Africa. Harshit Rana on the other hand made his long awaited debut during the Perth Test.
Kolkata Knight Riders splash cash on Venkatesh Iyer
Current champions set the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction on fire when they purchased Venkatesh Iyer. The 29-year-old was released by KKR at the end of the season and shelled out INR 23.75 Crores to make him one of the most costliest players of the day. Venkatesh Iyer was one of the key players for Kolkata in their title win last season.
South African stars Anrich Nortje and Quinton De Kock were also purchased by KKR. Afghanistan star Rahmanullah Gurbaz was back with Kolkata after getting released at the end of the season. To complete the homecoming, Angrish Raghuvanshi and Vaibhav Arora were also back home. Spin bowler Mayank Markande was picked up by KKR.
On the second day, Kolkata began by buying West Indian star Rovman Powell for 1.5 Crore. Australian speedster Spencer Johnson was added to the team for INR 2.8 Crores. Veteran Indian batter, Manish Pandey came back to Kolkata for INR 75 Lakhs ahead of the IPL 2025 season.
