Star India batter Shreyas Iyer made the headlines after leading PBKS’ spectacular campaign to the final in the recently concluded IPL 2025. He guided the team to the finals, where they lost to RCB by a narrow margin of 6 runs, ending up as runners-up. With that, Iyer became the first-ever captain in the history of the Indian Premier League to lead three different teams to the finals of the tournament.
In the same line of events, a senior BCCI official also told The Indian Express that Iyer has now officially joined the race for Team India’s white-ball captaincy, be it in the ODIs or the T20Is.
You are always expected to perform as captain - Shreyas Iyer
Meanwhile, Iyer himself recently broke his silence after BCCI acknowledged him in the captaincy race. He feels that captaincy is a challenge which inculcates a sense of maturity in an individual as a leader.
“It (captaincy) brings in a lot of maturity and responsibility. You are always expected to perform and contribute in the best way possible for the team because whenever there is a hurdle or some kind of adversity you face as a team, they always come to the captain. I think I have got a lot of experience as I have been captaining since I was 22. I have enjoyed the moments and also embraced it. I love the fact to come out and lead,” said Iyer on the sidelines of the ongoing Mumbai T20 League.
“"I just try to get into my zone, and I try to do things which are there in front of me. I try to stay focused as much as possible, just stay in the present, embrace the situation, and embrace the crowd because sometimes they get very electrifying and pass on the energy to you. So I keep telling myself that I want the crowd to cheer my name, and that brings that kind of motivation,” he added later.
