As the conflict between India and Pakistan rages on, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has taken a huge call. The Indian Premier League (IPL) has been suspended indefinitely due to the tensions between the two nations. The decision was taken on Friday morning, keeping the players' and fans’ security in mind.
It is to be noted that the game between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in Dharamshala was abandoned on Thursday. Crowds were asked to leave the ground after just 10.1 overs of play with the home side placed at 122 for one. Floodlights were switched after the fall of Priyansh Arya’s wicket.
The game on Friday was set to be played at the Ekana Stadium between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). Pakistan Super League (PSL) has already been suspended with the remaining games to be played in UAE. The game between Peshawar and Karachi on Thursday was abandoned.
Australian players looking for early exit from IPL
Sydney Morning Herald (SMH) reported that Australian players are seeking an early exit from the tournament. The reports came early on Friday morning after the game between PBKS and Delhi was abandoned. SMH reported, “According to several player agents, who spoke under the condition of anonymity, a growing number of Australian players have expressed anxiety over their safety. Many are ready to leave India as soon as possible, particularly those based near sensitive border areas.”
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia put out a statement after the PBKS vs DC game and said, "Keeping everything in mind, we have decided to call off today’s match. Things are not ok as of now, and that’s why we called off today’s match, not just in Dharamsala but from neighbouring countries, they’re escalating the things. Players, spectators, and support staff's safety is our priority. We will do everything that is in the best interest of the nation. We are monitoring the situation and I'll take the call accordingly.”
IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal spoke to PTI about the league’s future and said “We are closely monitoring the situation. The tension between India and Pakistan continues. As of now, there are no directives from the central government. We will make decisions regarding the conduct of the league after considering all factors.”
