Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) won their first match in Chennai since 2008 in the Indian Premier League. Chennai Super Kings’ batting gave in against a strong RCB performance with the ball as the visitors claimed their second win of the season. The decision to bowl first after winning the toss by Ruturaj Gaikwad backfired as the visitors put up a huge score on the board.
Chennai Super Kings had a horrendous start to the innings as they lost Rahul Tripathi and Ruturaj Gaikwad early. Both batters were sent back to the hut by Josh Hazlewood, while Deepak Hooda was dismissed by Bhuvneshwar Kumar for four runs. By the end of six overs, CSK had scored just 30 runs to put themselves under pressure.
None of the CSK batters managed to put up a fight with the bat, with Rachin Ravindra top scoring with 41 runs. MS
Dhoni stayed not out on 30 off just 16 balls as RCX won the game by 50 runs to stay at the top of the table. Rajat Patidar, who scored 51 with the bat, was beaming with delight as he became the first RCB skipper since Rahul Dravid to win a game in Chennai.
The best bowler for RCB was Australian pacer Josh Hazlewood, who picked up three wickets for 21 runs. Yash Dayal and Liam Livingstone picked two wickets each while Bhuvneshwar Kumar picked a single wicket. RCB next faces the Gujarat Titans at home, while the Chennai Super Kings will take on the Rajasthan Royals on Sunday.
Ruturaj Gaikwad speaks after huge loss
Chennai Super Kings skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad was downcast after the game. During his chat with the broadcasters, the 28-year-old said, "I still feel 170 was a par score on this wicket. It wasn't that easy to bat. Bad fielding cost us. When you're chasing 170, you have a little more time, but when you're chasing 20 runs extra, you have to bat differently in the powerplay and it didn't happen today. It got a little slower; it got a little sticky.”
Gaikwad also added, “The new ball was sticking a bit. I don't know how it happened. Rahul backed his shot; I backed mine as well; sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. But as I said when you have a par score in mind and you are chasing 20 extra, you always want to stay ahead.”
