KKR in IPL 2024 (Source: X)
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are the third most successful franchise in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). After Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Mumbai Indians (MI), who had won five IPL titles each, KKR have tasted more success in the cash-rich league with two trophies and several heroic performances.
Their triumphant outings were in the 2012 and 2014 seasons under the leadership of 2011 World Cup hero, Gautam Gambhir. The former KKR opener rejoined the Kolkata franchise as their mentor for the 2024 season and is in line to clinch another elusive title. They failed to qualify for the playoffs in two back-to-back seasons in 2022 and 2023, but this time they stormed into the knockouts as table toppers.
Shreyas Iyer and Co. finished the league stage of the 17th edition with 20 points and a remarkable net run rate of +1.428 – the most by any team in the history of IPL. The team's collective effort has seen them maintain their consistency and dominance so far in the tournament. Kolkata will face another formidable opponent Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Qualifier 1 on Tuesday (May 21) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Here’s a look at KKR’s records in the playoff stage in IPL History
One of the seven teams that have been a part of the IPL since its inception in 2008, KKR has qualified for the playoffs eight times (including the IPL 2024 season). Their first playoff appearance was in the 2011 season when they lost to Mumbai Indians in the Eliminator. They last reached the knockouts in 2021 and lost to Chennai Super Kings in the Final.
So far, KKR has played 13 playoff matches and has managed to win eight of them, including two finals in 2012 and 2014. It is interesting to note that, the Eden Gardens boys have not lost the first qualifier in their two attempts.
