Two top-class teams of the Indian Premier League, CSK and RCB crossed swords in a high-octane ‘southern derby’, a thrilling virtual quarter-final to seal secure their place in the playoff stage of the tournament. The match was played in a ‘rain fear’ at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Super Saturday, May 18.
However, in a delightful piece of news for the cricket fans, the match was played with an entire 20-over-a-side game even after the rain interruption. The visiting skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad won the toss and asked the hosts to bat first; batting first, RCB managed to post a big total of 218 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in the allotted 20 overs.
The opening pair of former skipper and current skipper Faf du Plessis provided a strong start of 78 runs in 9.5 overs. Kohli and Du Plessis played the crucial knocks of 47 and 54 runs, respectively followed by middle-order batter Rajat Patidar’s 41 runs off just 23 balls, with 2 fours and 4 sixes. Besides these, star all-rounder Cameron Green also smashed 38 runs off just 17 balls, hitting 3 fours and 3 sixes with the bat.
Shardul Thakur scalped 2 wickets for CSK in the first innings, alongside one wicket each bagged by Tushar Deshpande and Mitchell Santner.
RCB end CSK hopes with an iconic win in thrilling 'match for the ages'
While chasing the target, the CSK had quite good moments in the game but those were in ‘bits and pieces’. They faced the first blow on the very first ball of the second innings in skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad. However, Rachin Ravindra and Ajinkya Rahane tried hard to keep the CSK in the fight throughout the match, with the knocks of 61 and 33 runs, respectively.
Later, Ravindra Jadeja and Dhoni also played the crucial and blistering knocks of 42 and 25 runs off just 22 and 13 balls, respectively. But all the efforts were in vain as RCB pacer Yash Dayal managed to hold the nerves in the last over to restrict CSK to a total of 191 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in the entire 20 overs.
The match also became very thrilling for the fans as the cutoff score for CSK to qualify for playoffs was 201 instead of chasing the entire target; eventually, RCB managed to keep the defending champions away from the cut-off score and won the match by 27 runs to qualify for the playoff stage of the tournament.
Yash Dayal scalped 2 wickets for RCB, alongside one wicket each picked by Glenn Maxwell, Mohammed Siraj, Lockie Ferguson, and Cameron Green.
Now, RCB have become the fourth team to qualify for the playoffs of the ongoing Indian Premier League 2024 after RR, KKR, and SRH.
Here’s how fans reacted to RCB’s ‘iconic’ win against CSK in the last league match of IPL 2024:

Gotta appreciate this guy Yash Dayal. Ever since Rinku Singh hit him for 5 sixes he has never been the same. He just went on and got to be better.
