DC emerged victorious by 20 runs in a ‘roller-coaster’ match against RR in the 56th game of the ongoing IPL 2024. The Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi hosted this all-important and must-win game, especially for the hosts Delhi Capitals. The visiting skipper Sanju Samson won the toss and asked the Capitals to bat first.

Batting first, DC posted a big total of 221 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in the allotted 20 overs. The openers Jake Fraser-McGurk and Abhishek Porel played the blistering knocks of 50 and 65 runs off just 20 and 36 balls, respectively. Besides these two, Tristan Stubbs who came to play lower down the order, also scored quick 41 runs off just 20 balls, with 3 fours and 3 sixes.

Ravichandran Ashwin scalped 3 wickets for RR in the first innings, alongside one wicket each bagged by Trent Boult, Sandeep Sharma, and Yuzvendra Chahal.

Sanju Samson's valiant efforts go in vain as DC dominate in the second innings

While chasing the target, RR didn’t have an expected start as they lost their first wicket in Yashasvi Jaiswal just on the second ball of the 1st over. However, the partnership of 63 runs for the second wicket between senior opener Jos Buttler and skipper Sanju Samson helped RR to stabilise themselves before Buttler was dismissed at the individual score of 19 runs and the team’s score of 19 runs.

It was only the skipper Sanju Samson for RR who kept struggling at one end amidst a fall of wickets at the other end. Samson was dismissed in a controversial decision in the 16th over when the visitors had scored 162 runs for the loss of 3 wickets in 15.3 overs. Sanju played the fourth ball towards the long-on boundary where Shai Hope executed a brilliant catch to dismiss the RR skipper.

Samson scored 86 runs off just 46 balls, with 8 fours and 6 sixes; however, his knock went in vain as RR fell 21 runs short of the target of 21 runs and lost the game by 20 runs to their 3rd defeat in the tournament after 11 matches. Star DC spinner Kuldeep Yadav won the ‘Player of the Match award for his amazing bowling performance.
