The Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) search for a new head coach for India’s Senior Men’s Cricket Team is currently one of the most ‘talked-about’ topics among both the fans and experts of the games. Meanwhile, there is also a debate among the experts around the question if it will be a foreign head coach for the Board will go ahead with an Indian head coach to succeed Rahul Dravid, who is currently in charge.

Given the questions around this debate, here we’ll have a look at the 3 reasons why BCCI should go ahead with an Indian head coach over a foreign candidate.

Here’s a look at 3 reasons why BCCI should appoint an Indian head coach:

1. Understanding of domestic structure

The domestic cricketing circuit of India is one of the wide-ranged domestic cricket setups in the world cricket. There are more than 20 competitions in Indian domestic cricket, including some major ones like Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy, and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy for three different formats, respectively, involving a huge number of talented cricketers across the diameter of India.

So, whoever will be taking the responsibility of ‘head coach’ for India’s Senior Men’s Team will be required to have a very sharp awareness and understanding of India’s ‘wide domestic cricket’. But it will only be possible for an Indian head coach to have a complete understanding of domestic cricket and talented domestic cricketers to build a better future for Indian cricket.

2. No language barrier between the coach and the players

One thing was highlighted by former India cricketer Virender Sehwag regarding the coordination between a coach and team concerning the IPL franchise RCB. Sehwag mentioned the language difference and the repercussions of having all foreign coaches in the support staff. However, Sehwag spoke about an IPL franchise but this theory needs to be applied in international cricket as well.

In India’s national squad, there are a lot of players from different cultures who have different languages and all of them are not compulsorily fluent in English. So, it will only be an Indian head coach who will be in a position to manage these differences and keep the entire team on the same page without letting any language barrier disturb the equilibrium of the team.

3. The Board can approach the coach at any time for accountability on the team’s performance

One of the major issues that the Indian cricketing administration faced was during the ‘Greg Chappell coaching era in 2005-07’, one of the most controversial phases. Things went from bad to worse Chappell was not ready to resign owing to the contractual terms but the fans and media badly wanted him to leave the position; everyone was demanding accountability from Chappell for the team’s miserable performances. But the Maximum BCCI could do was ‘end the contract with Chappell and let him go’.

But this would not be the case with an Indian head coach as he could be approached at any time for accountability on the team’s performance beyond the contractual terms and obligations. Apart from that, the board authorities will also be in touch with him to ask about all the developments within the team both on and off the field.
