After an embarrassing 10-wicket defeat against Australia in the second Test of the ongoing Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, Rohit Sharma’s India are the target of collective criticism. Many former cricketers and experts, be it from India or other cricketing nations have echoed each other’s opinions while questioning the decision-making of Indian team management and skipper Rohit Sharma.
In the same vein, former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali has also joined the bandwagon; he made blunt, ‘hard and fast-lined’ remarks while speaking after India’s defeat in the second Test.
Discussions will start about the whitewash against New Zealand - Basit Ali
The former middle-order batter also mentioned India’s clean sweep defeat by 0-3 against New Zealand, that too in a home Test series.
“Can India win the series 4-1? It seems difficult. Now, India should focus on winning the Border-Gavaskar series. Now, discussions will start about the whitewash against New Zealand. India will deeply regret that it was a huge mistake,” said Basit Ali in a video on his YouTube channel.
“No one could have imagined that the Indian team, which defeated England on their home ground, would be whitewashed by New Zealand. But this is what cricket is about. India is now bearing the consequences of losing that series,” he added later.
Returning to India’s short but a ‘roller coaster’ journey in the ongoing Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, the two-time WTC runners-up started the series under the captaincy of star pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah. He led the team from the front with an amazing five-wicket haul, which played a decisive role in handing Australia a massive 295-run defeat. But India couldn’t carry their performance from the first Test to the second assignment at the Adelaide Oval in Adelaide. The contest ended only in three days with the hosts completely outplaying India led by Rohit Sharma by a huge margin of 10 wickets. The series is now levelled with a scoreline of 1-1.
Now, both teams will take on each other in the third Test of the five-match series at the Brisbane Cricket Ground in Brisbane from 14th December onwards.
