Sri Lanka announced the squad for ICC T20 World Cup 2024 (File Photo: Internet)
In a recent piece of news, the T20 World Cup 2014 champions, Sri Lanka announced their squad for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024, scheduled to be played in the USA and West Indies next month. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) announced the squad through an official media release.
“The Cricket Selection Committee selected the following 15-member Sri Lanka squad to take part in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. The squad was approved by the Honorable Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs, Harin Fernando. The team will depart for the World Cup on May 14, 2024,” read the official statement of SLC in their media release.
Star all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga will be leading the Islanders’ squad in the prestigious cricket biennial, starting on June 1, 2024. Star batter Charith Asalanka will be there in the role of Hasaranga’s deputy in the 9th edition of the T20 World Cup.
Former skipper and veteran all-rounder Angelo Matthews to feature in T20 WC 2024 for Sri Lanka
Besides that, the former skipper and veteran all-rounder Angelo Mathews has also made it to Sri Lanka’s squad for the T20 WC 2024. There are very less surprises in the Sri Lanka squad as it features mostly the regular players who have been playing for the team for the last couple of months.
The star CSK pacer Matheesha Pathirana has also cut the WC squad of the Islanders. He has been a brilliant performer with the ball in the ongoing IPL 2024, scalping 13 wickets before getting ruled out due to a hamstring injury.
SLC’s Cricket Selection Committee has also picked 4 players as the travelling reserves, including the likes of Asitha Fernando, Vijayakanth Viyaskanth, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, and Janith Liyange.
