Former Australian star Ricky Ponting has confirmed that he has stepped down as the Delhi Capitals coach. It was rumoured a few weeks ago that the franchise was on the brink of severing its ties with the former Australian skipper and batting great. The team is now on the lookout for a new coach with the names of Sourav Ganguly being favoured.
Ricky Ponting while speaking to ICC review said “They made it pretty clear they wanted to head in a different direction with someone who could give them a bit more time and a bit more availability through the off-season, particularly to spend more time in India with the local players. I just couldn’t do that with the other commitments I have”
Delhi Capitals had a season to forget in 2023 and made mini progress as they were on the cusp of making it to the playoffs. IPL 2025 is set to see a massive upheaval as there is set to be an IPL mega auction ahead of the new season.
Ricky Ponting ends his stint with Delhi Capitals
Former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting has decided to relinquish his job as the coach of IPL side Delhi Capitals. The move comes after weeks of speculation about the future of Ponting with the Capitals.
Speaking to ICC review, Ricky Ponting also said “I think what you’ll find is that they’ll probably end up with an Indian-based head coach. Certainly, that’s some of the dialogue that I’ve had with them”
There were also reports doing the rounds that Ricky Ponting could be in the running for the England white-ball coaching set-up. Matthew Mott had stepped down as the coach and there were few high-profile names being linked with the job.
No, I wouldn’t ever consider doing that, actually. I’m on record saying that international jobs for me right now are not really where my life is at, with just so much more time taken up with an international job” said Ricky Ponting about the England job.
