Ravichandran Ashwin curtained his glorious international career, immediately announcing his retirement after the third Test of the ongoing Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Meanwhile, Ashwin also said that ‘there is a punch left’ in him which he’ll showcase in the club level cricket.
In the same line of events, Ashwin flew back home to Chennai in the middle of the series, just after making his ‘retirement announcement’ public. The 38-year-old received a heroic welcome after landing in Chennai.
Subsequently, the former legendary off-spinner addressed the media outside his residence in Chennai. While speaking to the journalists, he discussed the future aspects of his cricketing career in club-level cricket or the Indian Premier League.
“I'm going to play for CSK, and don't be surprised if I aspire to play as long as I can,” said Ashwin to the journalists while answering a query on his future as a cricketer.
“I don't think Ashwin the cricketer is done, Ashwin the Indian cricketer has called it a time, that's it,” he added later.
I would like to expose and probably showcase that in club-level cricket - Ashwin on his future as a cricketer
The moment of his retirement came just after the end of the fifth day’s game in the third Test of BGT 2024 at the Gabba in Brisbane. He was also intimating the same to the former India skipper Virat Kohli when the action was stopped due to rain.
“I really didn’t want to make this about myself. Honestly, I think it would have been better if (Jasprit) Bumrah was here or Akash Deep was here. But Rohit (Sharma) is unfortunate to have me along his side. I am not going to take too much of your time. This will be my last day as an Indian cricketer in all formats at the international level. I do feel there is a bit of punch left in me as a cricketer but I would like to expose and probably showcase that in club-level cricket but this will be the last day,” said Ashwin while making his announcement official.
