Jasprit Bumrah became the highest wicket taker for Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The 31-year-old achieved this feat during the game against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Sunday afternoon. Former Sri Lankan pacer Lasith Malinga and Bumrah were tied on 170 wickets each ahead of the game. With figures of 4/22 from his four overs, Bumrah reached 174 wickets going past Malinga.

Mumbai Indians put out a short video of the duo celebrating the feat. Indian pacer could be heard saying, “They are making content (pointing at the camera). He’s still better (points at Malinga”. The former Lankan legend with a smile on his face pointed towards Bumrah and said “He’s the best”.

Lasith Malinga has picked a total of 195 wickets for Mumbai Indians with 170 in the IPL and 25 in Champions League T20. Jasprit Bumrah has picked 174 wickets in the IPL and three in CLT20 tournament. This makes Malinga still the leading wicket taker for MI but has lost his lead as far as IPL is concerned. It is to be noted that Malinga played a key role in Bumrah’s formative years and helped the young pacer hone his yorker bowling skills.

Ravi Shastri urges Rohit Sharma to manage Bumrah’s workload

After the IPL 2025 season ends, team India will head to England to start the 2025-27, World Test Championship cycle. Focus will be on Bumrah who is set to be a key part of the side along with Mohammed Siraj, and Mohammed Shami. The 31-year-old was India’s key bowler during the Australian series before breaking down in the final Test in Sydney.

Speaking to the ICC review, former India coach Ravi Shastri has asked India’s team management to exercise caution as far as Bumrah is concerned. Shastri said “I would be very, very careful with Bumrah. I would give him two Test matches at a time and then wait for the break. Ideally, make him play four. You'll be tempted to make him play five if he starts off in a great manner, but it's how his body pulls up”

Shastri also said that if Bumrah, Siraj, and Shami are fit then the trio could be handful for English batters. “I think with Siraj, Jasprit and Mohammed Shami, these three, if they are fully fit, they will give England heaps of problems. It's a quality, top-class pace attack when you get these three fit. And what I like about Siraj, I'm glad he was hurt after being put out, not in the side for the Champions Trophy. That's what you want.”
