The stepping stone towards it was laid in 1983, when the unexpected happened and the Indian Team won the Cricket World Cup.

With the bat, Kapil scored 303 runs at an average of 60.6 and a terrific strike rate of over 108. With the ball, he claimed 12 wickets at an average of just above 20 and an economy rate of 2.92.
Sourav Ganguly
Sourav Ganguly was the captain of the Indian team in the Champions Trophy 2002. After unexpectedly beating South Africa in the semifinal, the final against Sri Lanka was washed out due to rain.

Hence, the trophy was shared between India and Sri Lanka. Ganguly, hence, won an ICC trophy as a captain.A year later, he got close to winning the ODI World Cup, but in vain.
MS Dhoni
MS Dhoni has the most ICC title wins as the Indian captain. His first win came in the T20 World Cup in 2007 after a devastating ODI World Cup. Just months after being appointed as the captain, Dhoni helped India win an ICC Tournament.

His biggest achievement was winning the ODI World Cup in 2011, which was India's first ODI World Cup win in 28 years. Following that, India won the Champions Trophy in 2013 under his captaincy.
Rohit Sharma
Rohit Sharma missed out on winning the ODI World Cup in 2023 as the captain. However, he won the T20 World Cup in 2024, which was India's first title win in 11 years. A year later, he led India to its third Champions Trophy title win. In the process, Rohit became only the second Indian captain to win more than one ICC title.

In the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup in 2025, the Indian Women achieved the incredible feat.
