In a video that is making the rounds on social media, a few Indian cricketing fans in Varanasi are performing ‘havan’ and are praying for the victory of the Indian team. It is not a very unusual sight in a country like India, where cricket is an emotion for the fans and they do anything and everything in their control to help the national team win.

Will team India be able to break the 37 year old curse?

It has also been a curse on the Indian team, because for the past 37 years, India has never won an ICC tournament final against New Zealand. India has been undefeated during the whole tournament, but if we look into the records, the India team has played two games against New Zealand in a major ICC tournament, starting with the 2000 Knockout Cup (now known as Champions Trophy) and the World Test Championship in the year 2021 . Both times it was seen that the Men in Black had defeated the Men in Blue.

The last time India won against New Zealand was under the leadership of Ravi Shastri in the Sharjah Cup in 1988. This time if India manages to bag the Champions Trophy, it would be the first time India defeats New Zealand in an ICC final event. In the previous match in which the two teams faced off each other, India delivered a remarkable spell both with the ball and the bat. New Zealand was unable to chase the target and India’s rising star Varun Chakravarthy took a fifer, while he gained the title of being the ‘mystery spinner’ for the team.
