Former Australia skipper and head coach of IPL franchise Delhi Capitals, Ricky Ponting recently confirmed that he was approached for the position of head coach of Team India. Meanwhile, he also cleared that it is not pretty sure if he will take over the responsibility of head coach for India’s Senior Men’s Team.
Notably, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) invited applications for this position almost one and a half weeks ago. The two names before Ponting who made it to the headlines as the potential contenders for the role of India head coach are former Kiwi stalwart Stephen Fleming and former India batter, KKR mentor, Gautam Gambhir.
Here's what Ricky Ponting said about getting approached
Amidst all this, Ricky Ponting also expressed his desire and ambitions to be a national coach of India’s Senior Men’s Team.
“I've seen a lot of reports about it. Normally these things pop up on social media before you even know about them, but there were a few little one-on-one conversations during the IPL, just to get a level of interest from me as to whether I would do it,” said Ponting on ICC Review.
“I'd love to be a senior coach of a national team, but with the other things that I have in my life and wanting to have a bit of time at home…everyone knows if you take a job working with the Indian team you can't be involved in an IPL team, so it would take that out of it as well. "Also, a national head coach is a 10 or 11-month-of-the-year job, and as much as I'd like to do it, it just doesn't fit into my lifestyle right now and the things that I enjoy doing,” he added later.
Speaking about the national India men’s team, they’ll be in action in the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024 under the coaching of current head coach Rahul Dravid; his tenure will end with the conclusion of the T20 World Cup 2024 as he is not willing to continue and apply for the same role.
