Former New Zealand skipper is set to play in his third Champions Trophy starting on Wednesday. Amongst the modern-day batters Kane Williamson has one of the best records in Champions Trophy.

Advertisment

Williamson made his Champions Trophy debut in 2013 that saw New Zealand being placed with Australia, England, and Sri Lanka, The Kiwis crashed out in the first stage of the tournament with just three points from three matches. The right-handed batter had a much better outing in the next edition which was played in 2017.

In the last few matches, Kane Williamson has been in roaring form with the bat. The 34-year-old has scored 225 runs during the recent Tri-series that was held in Pakistan. Williamson began with 58 against the hosts before scoring 133 not out against South Africa. In the final, the elegant batter scored 34 runs as his side went onto win the title.

Kane Williamson was part of the 2013 New Zealand squad that crashed out in the first stage of Champions Trophy. In the first match of the tournament, Williamson scored 16 runs against Sri Lanka that the Kiwis won by one wicket. The next match against Australia saw the match getting abandoned due to rain with the batter not out on 18.

In the final match against hosts England, the Kiwi batter scored 67 off just 54 balls as New Zealand lost by 10 runs. In 2017, the world saw much wiser and much better version of Williamson as he scored 244 runs from three matches. New Zealand yet again were out in the first round in a group which consisted of England, Australia, and Bangladesh.

The right-handed batter began the tournament with his knock off 100 off 97 balls against Australia. The game just like in 2013 got washed off with both sides sharing a point each. In the next match against England, the right-handed batter scored 87 off 98 balls but couldn’t prevent the Kiwis from a loss. The final match against Bangladesh saw New Zealand lose by five wickets as Williamson notched up 57 runs.

How will Kane Williamson perform in Champions Trophy 2025?

Kane Williamson ICC stats

In the upcoming Champions Trophy tournament, New Zealand have a chance to win their second title. The Kiwis had won their only fifty over ICC tournament in 2000 when they beat India in the finals in Nairobi. Skipper Mitchell Santner will be looking at Kane Williamson to be the difference maker with the bat once more. The 34-year-old has been in great form across formats and has been scoring runs at will. Williamson has also been improving his strike rate which was evident with his 72-ball ton against South Africa. If the veteran batter can continue his terrific form the Kiwis could be on the podium lifting the title.
