Rohit Sharma and his side will take on Australia in the first semi-finals of the 2025 Champions Trophy on Tuesday. The match is set to be played at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai. Both sides have shared storied rivalry and have played some high octane matches in the white-ball format.

Last time these two sides met in an ICC event was in the 2024 T20 World Cup which India went onto win. Australia had beaten India in the finals of the 2023 ODI World Cup thanks to a century by Travis Head. Many Indian fans are wary of the threat Australia posses despite not having some of their star names. 

Team India ended the group matches unbeaten after their 44-run win over New Zealand on Sunday. The Men in Blue had started the tournament with wins over Bangladesh and Pakistan. On the other hand, Australia had started with a win over England in their first match before two washed out matches against South Africa and Afghanistan.

The Australians had also beaten India in the 2003 ODI World Cup finals thanks to Ricky Ponting's ton.

It is in the Champions trophy tournament; India enjoys a better record against Australia. The first meeting between the two sides in the event was in 1998 in what was called the ICC Knock-out Trophy. Team India led by Sachin Tendulkar’s 141 and 4/38 with the ball beat the Aussies by 44 runs. ‘

Their next encounter took place two years later in Nairobi. The match is famous for Yuvraj Singh scoring 84 and helping India win the match. Sachin Tendulkar who had legendary battles with Glenn McGrath took the Aussie bowler to the cleaners. This was also the only instance when Tendulkar verbally laid into an opposition player. 

Team India batted first and scored 265 for nine from their 50 overs. Yuvraj Singh top scored with 84 off 80 balls while Tendulkar hit 38 off 37 balls. In reply Australia were all out for 245 to hand India win by 20 runs. 

Australia then beat India in the 2006 Champions Trophy in a one-side encounter in Mohali. Rahul Dravid’s men batted first and posted 249/8 on the board thanks to fifties by Virender Sehwag (65) and Rahul Dravid (52). Australia managed to overhaul the target with 26 balls to spare thanks to half-centuries by Shane Watson, Ricky Ponting and Damien Martyn. 

The final meeting between the two sides in Champions Trophy happened in 2009. Australia were 234/4 in the 43rd over before incessant rains made sure the match was abandoned. In 2013, the two sides met in a warm-up game before the tournament began which India went onto win in what was an unofficial encounter. It has been 16 years since both India and Australia met in the Champions Trophy and the game on Tuesday promises to be an exciting affair.
