After facing two consecutive matches in the recently concluded ODI tri-nation series, South Africa are set to play in the upcoming highly anticipated ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan and UAE. The Proteas will start their journey in the tournament with their campaign opener against Afghanistan on February 21, at 2:30 PM (IST).
Notably, South Africa clinched the title of the Champions Trophy in its inaugural edition 27 years back in 1998. It was the time when the tournament was being played as a knockout tournament. They will aim to register their second title win in the tournament’s history with a title win in the upcoming edition of the marquee international tournament.
However, Temba Bavuma’s men haven’t been in a decent run of form in the ODIs ahead of the ninth edition of the Champions Trophy. They are coming off two consecutive defeats against New Zealand and Pakistan in the last two ODIs.

Here is South Africa’s SWOT analysis for the Champions Trophy 2025
Strengths: Strong and in-form batting border
South Africa’s squad for the Champions Trophy 2025 includes some big names in the batting order. The list includes the likes of in-form wicketkeeper-batter Ryan Rickelton, alongside some veteran faces including Heinrich Klaasen, Rassie Van der Dussen, and David Miller. Besides these, young batter Tristan Stubbs will also be there to add some crucial and quick runs in the middle order.
Apart from the intact middle order, South Africa’s top order will also include the star in-form Southpaw Tony de Zorzi and skipper Temba Bavuma. The two are expected to start the innings for the Proteas in the upcoming edition of the Champions Trophy 2025.
Weakness: A record of losing peak in the ICC knockout games
Besides their consistent and brilliant performances in the last couple of ICC tournaments, South Africa have been also been under the scanner for choking out or losing their peak in the knockout games of the major tournaments. Their history of getting fumbled in the big matches might haunt them in the Champions Trophy 2025 as well.
Last year in the T20 World Cup 2024, Aiden Markram-led South Africa made it to the Final of any ICC World Cup for the first time. But they eventually failed to chase down a comfortable-looing target against the eventual champions India. So, it might emerge as one of the major weaknesses for the Proteas in their Champions Trophy 2025 campaign.
Opportunities: A mix of experienced and young players
South Africa’s Champions Trophy 2025 squad has a mix of both veteran and young players. So, it will be an amalgam of both experience and young energy. The young players, including batter Tristan Stubbs, all-rounder Marco Jansen, and Wiaan Mulder will have a chance to step up for their side’s success in the tournament.
On the other hand, the veteran players will also look ahead to utilize their experience to win the games for South Africa in the Champions Trophy 2025.
Threats: A poor track record in Pakistan
Notably, Temba Bavuma and Co. didn’t have an expected run of form in the ODI tri-nation series in Pakistan and they will be playing their Champions Trophy matches at the same venues. In Pakistan's recently concluded tri-nation series, South African players looked clueless in acclimatizing to the conditions and pitches.
Given that, it will be hard for them to convert their performance into favourable results as they will be playing their Champions Trophy matches at the same tracks where they lost in the tri-nation ODI series.
