Ben stokes led England have ended the third day of the opening Test match in Christchurch. New Zealand ended the day at 155/6 with an overall lead of four runs. The home team were rocked by the English pacers who decimated the Kiwi batting unit. It was a huge jolt for the home team who had just beat India 3-0 away from home.

England had ended the second at 319/5 trailing the home side by 29 runs. Harry Brook was batting on 132 with skipper Ben Stokes on 37. The pair added 159 runs for the 6th wicket in 202 balls before Harry Brook was out for 171. His knock came off 197 balls with 15 fours and 3 sixes.

Skipper Ben Stokes was out for 80 off 146 balls with 9 hits to the fence. Gus Atkinson scored 48 runs from 36 balls while Brydon Carse scored 33 runs from 24 balls. England were all out for 499 with an overall lead of 151 runs. Matt Henry picked 4/84 from his 23 overs while Nathan Smith picked 3 wickets on debut.

Chris Woakes and Brydon Carse leave New Zealand reeling

New Zealand skipper Tom Latham was the first man to be dismissed for 1 when he fell to Chris Woakes in the 3rd over. Brydon Carse then had Devon Conway caught by Gus Atkinson for 8 runs from 26 balls. Rachin Ravindra and Kane Williamson then added 41 runs for the 3rd wicket.

That stand was broken when Carse dismissed Rachin Ravindra for 24. Former skipper Kane Williamson was the best batter for the home team. The 34-year-old became the first ever Kiwi batter to score 9000 runs in Test cricket. Chris Woakes dismissed Kane Williamson for 61 and in the very next ball got the wicket of Tom Blundell.

The final wicket of the day was Daryl Mitchell who was out for 19 when he was out LBW to Brydon Carse. At the time of stumps, Daryl Mitchell was not out on 31 with Nathan Smith batting on 1. With two more days to go, England are at the top of the game in the first match being played in Christchurch.
