Star New Zealand batter Kane Williamson is likely to miss the opening Test of the upcoming series against India, following a groin injury sustained during the recent series against Sri Lanka. New Zealand Cricket confirmed that the star batter will miss the first match in Bengaluru, with his departure for India delayed as he undergoes rehabilitation.

The injury has cast doubt over Kane Williamson’s availability for the early stages of the series, but there is optimism he could return later if his recovery goes as planned. New Zealand selector Sam Wells shared his thoughts on the situation, emphasizing that the team's priority is to ensure Williamson heals fully before rejoining the squad.

“The advice we've received is that the best course of action is for Kane to rest and rehabilitate now rather than risk aggravating the injury. We're hopeful that if the rehabilitation goes to plan, Kane will be available for the latter part of the tour,” Wells said

Mark Chapman replaces Kane Williamson

In Williamson's absence, New Zealand has called up Mark Chapman as cover. Although Chapman is uncapped in Test cricket, his strong performances in first-class cricket and limited-overs formats have earned him the nod. Chapman has an impressive first-class average of 41.9 and boasts six centuries, with his standout moment coming against India A in 2020.

Additionally, Michael Bracewell will be available for only the first Test before heading home for the birth of his second child. His spot in the squad for the remainder of the series will be taken by spinner Ish Sodhi.

Williamson has been a crucial figure in New Zealand’s past contests against India, playing 13 Tests and accumulating 871 runs, with an average of 37.87. The team will certainly feel his absence as they face the challenge of playing India on home soil, but they remain hopeful for his return later in the series.
