Big relief for Mumbai Indians fans, new IPL retention rules could see massive names stay

Indian Express carried a report late on Wednesday evening that the BCCI could allow five retentions for each IPL side. This will be music to the ears of Mumbai Indians fans who could see their former skipper Rohit Sharma be retained. The former IPL winners are yet to make an official statement on Rohit’s future with the team. 

According to the reports carried out by the Indian Express, the BCCI has decided to go with the 5 retention rule after speaking to the teams. Many of the sides and franchise owners wanted the retention policy to not disturb the core of the team. 

While this move will be welcomed by the likes of Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, a few teams may not be happy. There are a few teams that have called for a complete overhaul ahead of the IPL 2025 auctions. 

What does the new rule mean for all IPL teams?

With the BCCI adhering to the demands of the franchises, the next IPL Auction could be one to watch out for. The likes of Mumbai, Chennai, and even Rajasthan Royals along with current holders KKR could retain their top stars. 

The focus will be on the likes of Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals who have been huge movers at the auction table. Ricky Ponting has just taken over as the coach of the Punjab side to replace Trevor Bayliss. According to rumors he could be joined by David Warner who could be released by Delhi. 

MS Dhoni could be the man in focus after the new rules were announced. There is still no clarity over the future of India and Chennai’s former skipper. The veteran star had said that he would take a decision based on the rules given out by the BCCI. 

IPL 2024 runners-up Sunrisers Hyderabad will also be looking at the dynamics. Kavya Maran is known to make high-profile signings during the auction. That paid rich dividends as her acquisition of Pat Cummins and Travis Head took the team to the finals. 

In just a few months all the teams will gather around the table to pick their favorite players. Mumbai Indians fans now will be keen to know if their Hitman is still part of the team's plans or if will he enter the auction pool ahead of the new season.
