Jasprit Bumrah's visible frustration towards Sam Konstas became the talk of the town towards the end of day one's play during the SCG Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy. The fact that Bumrah sent back Usman Khawaja on the last ball fired him, and he vented at Konstas. But the Indian great, being the calm-headed person that he is, did not let his aggression go too far.
Now, Australian head coach Andrew McDonald believes that the ICC and Andy Pycroft, the match referee, consider this "intimidating" behaviour acceptable. He added that the only conversation he had with Konstas regarding this was to check if he was okay.
"My conversation to him (Konstas) was just around whether he's okay. Clearly, the way that India celebrated was quite intimidating. It's clearly within the Laws of the Game, within the rules and regulations—there's been no charges laid," McDonald said during the press conference at the end of Day 2.
"But to have an opposition obviously swarm the non-striker like that—we've got a duty care to our player to make sure he's okay and in a headspace to go out the next day and perform. So that's all those conversations were.
"It's clear that it's acceptable because there were no fines or punishments. I'll leave that up to the ICC and obviously Andy Pycroft being the match referee and the umpires out there. If they thought that it was satisfactory, then I suppose that's the benchmark we're playing amongst," he added.
Bumrah and Konstas engage in heated conversation
The incident in question happened after Usman Khawaja had kept Bumrah waiting to bowl the fourth ball of the final over of the day's play. Konstas threw some heated words at the interim Indian captain, and Bumrah, usually a calm head, did not hold back. The umpire interviened and stopped the fight from escalating.
After he finally took Khawaja's wicket, Bumrah ran up to the 19-year-old batter and gave him a death stare. Virat Kohli and the rest of the Indian team were quick to join as they aggressively celebrated the wicket next to Kostas.
