Keshav Maharaj struck two early blows during the T20 World Cup final game versus India. The veteran South African spinner dismissed skipper Rohit Sharma and Rishabh Pant in a space of three balls to give the Indian team and its fans a massive jolt.
Earlier, it was India who won the toss in this massive game and decided to bat first. Indian had started well but lost their way in a bid to score quick runs. The third jolt came in the 5th over of the game when Suryakumar Yadav spooned an easy catch to Heinrich Klaasen for 3 as India lost their third wicket.
Former India skipper Virat Kohli was holding onto one end as he was batting on 22 when Yadav fell. At the loss of the third wicket, India sent in Axar Patel to negate the pace and bounce the South Africans were extracting from the track.
India loses their way after a brisk start to the game
The first over of the final game of the T20 World Cup was bowled by Marco Jansen. The left-arm seamer saw Virat Kohli hit him for three beautiful boundaries to set the final in motion.
Virat Kohli began with a tremendous cover drive and followed it up with a clip of his legs for four. The final ball of the first over saw Kohli play a straight drive that sped towards the boundary for the third boundary of the over.
Rohit Sharma then hit two boundaries past the third-man region off Keshav Maharaj. The Indian skipper then tried to employ the sweep shot only to be caught by Heinrich Klaasen for 9 runs off 5 balls.
Rishabh Pant came out to bat at number 3 and saw off the first ball. Just like Rohit Sharma, the Indian wicketkeeper too went for a sweep only to glove the ball to Quinton De Kock. The Indians were quick to go for the review but the replays confirmed that Pant was out for a 2nd ball duck.

Batting at number 4, much was expected out of Suryakumar Yadav. The 33-year-old had earlier survived when he chipped the ball but the Proteas couldn’t hold onto the chance. It was soon 34/3 when Kagiso Rabada bowled one on the pads of Yadav who went to flick the ball and was caught brilliantly by Klaasen. At the time of writing, India were 46/3 in 6.2 overs with Kohli batting on 26 and Axar Patel on 9.
