Things turned a bit serious between the former Indian cricketers and now the commentators, Sanjay Manjrekar and Irfan Pathan. It all started when the duo was discussing the mixup between the veteran India batter Virat Kohli and young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, which eventually happened to cost a wicket for India.
This on-air argument between Manjrekar and Pathan took place after the end of day 2’s play in the ongoing Boxing Day Test at the MCG in Melbourne. The conversation was heated up to the extent that the presenter Jatin Sapru had to intervene to end it as soon as it could be possible for him.
Manjrekar was seen criticizing Virat Kohli for this mixup and termed the latter’s fault as a ‘school-boy’ error. However, this claim made by Manjrekar didn’t go well with Irfan Pathan the latter didn’t hesitate to come up with a ‘hard and fast-lined’ reply in a tone which looked like shielding Kohli.
“Just because it’s Virat Kohli, we are thinking too much from his point of view. It was a very school [boy] error that he looked behind and decided there was no single there. It’s not the non-striker’s call to make. If it was Jaiswal’s bad call, the fielder Pat Cummins would have thrown it at the non-striker’s end. But because Kohli said no, Jaiswal had no chance,” said Manjrekar on Star Sports.
“Cricket’s truth is that when a ball goes to point, it’s the non-striker’s call but the striker can also say no,” replied Pathan while intervening Manjrekar’s remarks in the middle.
“Ifran Pathan’s new interpretation should be added in the coaching manual” – Sanjay Manjrekar’s Sarcastic attempt
However, Manjrekar came up with a ‘wrong example’ statement to confront Pathan’s opinion saying, “Irfan that’s about point, we are talking about the ball going behind [the non-striker]”
While Pathan kept continuing his opinion, it forced Manjrekar to say, “Ok, if you don’t want to let me speak, it’s fine.”
In the end Manjrekar concluded with a sarcastic remark at the former India all-rounder saying, “There should be a change to the coaching manual. Ifran Pathan’s new interpretation of running between the wickets should be included in it. A non-striker should also see if there’s a run or not even when the ball is behind him!”
