CSK defeated the ‘number 2’ Rajasthan Royals by 5 wickets in the 61st match of the ongoing IPL 2024 to keep their hopes alive for the playoff stage in the tournament. The low-scoring affair was played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday, May 12, 2024.
The match was an all-important and must-win for the Chennai Super Kings to stay relevant in the playoff race among the 7 teams in the current season. The visiting skipper Sanju Samson won the toss and decided to bat first.
Batting first, Rajasthan Royals could manage to post an ‘average’ total of only 141 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in the allotted 20 overs courtesy of star middle-order batter, Riyan Parag’s 47 runs off 35 balls, with one four and 3 sixes. Simarjeet Singh bowled brilliantly for CSK and scalped 3 wickets just at the cost of 26 runs in his 4 overs, alongside 2 wickets bagged by the star pacer Tushar Deshpande in the first innings.
While chasing the target, the hosts CSK comfortably chased down the target in 18.2 overs, scoring 145 runs for a loss of 5 wickets and winning the match by 5 wickets. Skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad played an unbeaten and crucial knock of 42 runs off 41 balls, with one four and 2 sixes.
Other than Gaikwad, opener Rachin Ravindra and ‘number 3’ batter Daryl Mitchell also scored 27 and 22 runs, respectively to help CSK chase down the target with 10 balls to spare. Star CSK pacer Simarjeet Singh won the ‘Player of the Match award for his amazing bowling performance.
