Virat Kohli went past Kumar Sangakkara in the third ODI of the 2025 series against Australia in Sydney to become the second-highest run scorer in ODIs. In ODIs, the batters from India, Australia, and Sri Lanka have had great longevity over the years, and hence are in the list of the most runs in the 50-over format.
As of October 2025, there are 15 batters with over 10000 runs in ODIs. Among them, six belong to India, while four are Sri Lankans, and a couple of batters are from the West Indies. A batter each from South Africa, Australia, and Pakistan is in the list. Some of the greatest ODI batters like Virat Kohli, Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, Ricky Ponting, Rohit Sharma, Sanath Jayasuriya, and others belong in the list.

Sanath Jayasuriya (13430 runs)
Sanath Jayasuriya is fifth in the list of ODI batters with the most runs. The Sri Lankan was a revolutionary batter in ODIs, who popularized making the most of the Powerplay overs by smashing the bowlers over the infield, making the most of the field restrictions.
Jayasuriya is the third most-capped player in the history of ODIs. In 445 matches, the former opener had 13430 runs at an average of 32.36 at a very good strike rate of 91.20, including 28 hundreds and 68 fifty-plus scores to his name.

Ricky Ponting (13704 runs)
Ricky Ponting is fourth in the list of ODI batters with the most runs. Ponting is one of the players to have won the most ICC titles in ODIs. More so, he led from the front as a batter and set a benchmark for an ODI player.
To date, he is the only Australian batter to have scored over 10000 runs in ODIs. In 375 matches, the former Australian skipper had 13704 runs at an average of 42.03 at a strike rate of 80.39, including 30 hundreds and 82 fifty-plus scores to his name.

Kumar Sangakkara (14234 runs)
Kumar Sangakkara is third in the list of ODI batters with the most runs. He was second in the list for over a decade until Virat overtook him in October 2025. He is the Sri Lankan batter with the most runs in the format and peaked towards the very end of his career.
In 404 matches, the former wicketkeeper batter had 14234 runs at an average of 41.98, at a strike rate of 78.86, including 25 hundreds and 93 fifty-plus scores to his name. His 93 fifty-plus scores are the second most for a batter in the format.

Virat Kohli (14255 runs)
Virat Kohli went past Kumar Sangakkara in the third ODI of the 2025 series against Australia in Sydney to become the second-highest run scorer in ODIs. The veteran is still going strong in the format and could well become only the second batter to score over 15000 runs in the format.
For a batter with over 5000 runs, he has the highest average in the 50-over format. In just 305 matches, the Indian number 3 has 14255 runs at an average of 57.71, at a strike rate of 93.26, including 51 hundreds and 75 fifty-plus scores to his name.
Sachin Tendulkar (18426 runs)
Sachin Tendulkar is the undisputed leading run scorer in the 50-over format. The legendary cricketer is the only batter to score over 15000 runs in both Tests and ODIs. He has the most caps for a player in both of the longer formats.
In 463 matches, the former Indian batter had 18426 runs at an average of 44.83 at a strike rate of 86.23, including 49 hundreds and 96 fifty-plus scores to his name. He is most likely to remain the highest run-scorer in the history of ODIs.
