The Mumbai Indians (MI) have endured a torrid start to their 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. Languishing at the bottom of the points table without a win, they have somehow failed to capitalize on key moments which has led to their current position. Although it's still early days in the tournament, their batting has been a major point of concern as individuals have failed to notch up big scores.

However, a beacon of hope has emerged for the 5-time champions with the news of Suryakumar Yadav's return from injury. The experienced batter has missed the team's first three games as he was at the National Cricket Academy, recovering from an ankle injury. Here, we look at three reasons why his return will bolster the side:

1. The World's No. 1 T20I batter

Suryakumar Yadav isn't just another player; he's one of the best in the shortest format of the game. Currently holding the No. 1 ranking in the ICC T20I batting charts, his return injects a potent dose of firepower into the MI batting lineup. Suryakumar boasts an exceptional IPL record, having amassed 3249 runs in 139 matches at a strike rate of over 143. His ability to score consistently and quickly is exactly what MI needs to get their campaign back on track. Just his presence at the crease inspires confidence in the dressing room and fear in the opposition's hearts.

2. Will help solve the middle-order woes:

MI's middle order hasn't really fired in unison so far this season. While players have got starts, the big scores have been lacking and that hasn't helped Mumbai's cause. Suryakumar's arrival will thus provide much-needed stability and experience in the middle. He's adept at rotating the strike, building partnerships, and accelerating the scoring rate when needed. His calm head under pressure will also ensure that the team can navigate tricky situations that are bound to arise in the cash-rich league.

3. Beast in the death:

Suryakumar's greatest strength lies in his ability to play shots all around the wicket with sheer audacity. He possesses a repertoire of unorthodox strokes that leave bowlers bewildered and shaken. This 360-degree shot-making becomes particularly valuable in the death overs, where boundaries are crucial. Surya can singlehandedly dismantle bowling attacks during this crucial phase, taking the pressure off the lower order and guiding the side.
