The SA20 2025 season is about to begin on January 9, and the first game will be between Sunrisers Eastern Cape and MI Cape Town at St George's Oval in Gqeberha. This is the third season of the tournament, and the Sunrisers have been the winners twice. The tournament is played between six teams in a double-round-robin format followed by three playoffs. Moreover, the finals are scheduled at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg.
The six teams will play against each other twice, and the top four teams will qualify for the playoffs. With the best players in the tournament, it just gets exciting with each passing game. Even though the league is new, there are a few records that could be broken this year.
Here are the three major records that can be broken in SA20 2025:
1. Sunrisers Eastern Cape could become the first team to win any franchise league thrice in a row
The Sunrisers Eastern Cape were the first-season winners who went on to retain their title in the second season. Under captain Aiden Markram, the team played extremely well in both seasons. This is the golden opportunity for them to win the trophy once again and create history. If the Sunrisers win the tournament this year, they'll become the first team in the history of T20 leagues to win a tournament consecutively.
2. Faf du Plessis can become the highest run-scorer in T20s for South Africa
One of the best players, Faf du Plessis, has a chance to become the highest run scorer in T20s for South Africa this season. In 373 innings, Du Plessis has scored 10950 runs at an average of 32.78. Currently, David Miller is the highest run scorer with 10956 runs in 464 matches. The legendary batter is just six runs away from breaking Miller's record in T20s.
3. Rashid Khan can overtake Dwayne Bravo as the highest wicket-taker in the history of T20 cricket
Rashid Khan is just nine wickets away from breaking Dwayne Bravo's record in T20. Currently, Bravo has taken 631 wickets, while Rashid has taken 622 wickets. So, Rashid has a high chance of surpassing Bravo in terms of wickets since the West Indies legend has retired from all forms of cricket.
