New York Knicks were one of the NBA's greatest teams in 2023-24. As a result, expectations were high entering the postseason. Unfortunately, the Knicks did not advance to the Eastern Conference Finals after being eliminated from the playoffs by the Indiana Pacers.
It's simple to see where things went wrong in the postseason. However, to make the squad a genuine threat in the Eastern Conference come October when the new season begins, changes may be necessary over the summer. Of course, New York will seek to keep OG Anunoby, who may become a free agent this summer. Keeping Isaiah Hartenstein on the roster will be a priority for the front staff
Randle played for the Los Angeles Lakers and the New Orleans Pelicans for the most of his playing career. Still, it's safe to state that New York has been his best place to be. Last season, the 29-year-old scored a career-high 25.1 points. Unfortunately, Randle's shoulder problem that necessitated surgery limited him to just 46 games in 2023–2024. Without Randle, the New York Knicks finished the season 21-15. Meanwhile, New York has failed to go past the Eastern Conference semifinals in two of its five seasons of missing the playoffs.
Julius Randle eligible for a contract extension
The three-time All-Star is eligible for a contract extension on August 3. However, retaining him on the roster would come at a high cost, as he may earn approximately $182 million over four years. Fortunately, the offseason begins on July 1, giving the Knicks time to choose who will (and will not) remain in New York. It will also allow the franchise to explore the free agency market.
Nonetheless, there will be many twists and turns in this position over the summer. However, New York Knicks must decide whether to move ahead with or without Randle, and either decision will have a long-term influence on the team's future.
