The Nuggets have emerged as a formidable force in the postseason, boasting a deep roster that showcased their versatility. However, despite being one of the top teams they lost the conference semifinals to the Timberwolves.
Nikola Jokić and Jamal Murray spearheaded the team's efforts, particularly evident in their intense semi-final clash against the Timberwolves. However, despite the stellar performance of the top duo, support from the rest of the starting lineup was lacking.
In Game 7 Nikola Jokić and Murray contributed 69 points while the remainder managed only 16. Michael Porter Jr.'s minimal scoring, with just 7 points, sparked frustration among fans and experts and in the latest instalment of Gil’s Arena, the panel convened for post-game analysis and offered suggestions for team improvement.
While analyzing their semifinal stint the host asked “What are the biggest issues that Nuggets need to address?” In response, Rashad McCants immediately said, “Michael Porter Jr. Move the f**k around… I am tired of you not showing up. Every year he posed to be ‘that guy'”.
Will the Nuggets drop Michael Porter Jr.?
The likelihood of the Nuggets making such a move is slim to none. The team from the Mile High City already boasts considerable dominance. Furthermore, they've committed to a long-term plan for Porter Jr., evident in the 5-year, $179 million contract they inked during the 2022-23 season, set to extend until 2026-27.
It's improbable that they would part ways with him after securing such a substantial deal. While Porter Jr. has excelled as a supporting player his contributions have been significant. In the regular season, he averaged 16.7 points across 81 games and showcased his scoring prowess with a season-high 34 points against the Knicks.
Amid all these discussions it is unlikely that Nuggets will give up on Porter Jr. this soon. He might continue there but will need to pull his socks up and perform in a pressure situation, unlike the recently concluded semifinal round.
