LA Lakers to immortalize Pat Riley with star plaza statue

The Los Angeles Lakers have announced plans to honour former head coach Pat Riley with a statue outside their downtown arena. It is a fitting tribute to the man who defined an era of dominance for the iconic franchise. The statue will join the Star Plaza lineup, cementing Riley’s legacy alongside Lakers legends like Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Kobe Bryant.

Riley, now 79, is widely recognized as one of the greatest coaches in NBA history. During his nine-year tenure with the Lakers, he led the team to four championships in the 1980s, shaping the "Showtime" era of basketball. Known for its fast-paced, electrifying style, the team under Riley's leadership became a symbol of excellence and entertainment. His overall record with the LA Lakers stands at an impressive 533-194, with 102 playoff victories.

“Pat is a Lakers icon,” said Jeanie Buss, the Lakers’ owner, in a statement. “His professionalism, commitment, and innovative coaching laid the foundation for what the Lakers represent today. The style of basketball he created is still our blueprint—an entertaining and winning team.”

JJ Redick praises Riley!

Riley's association with the Lakers began long before his coaching success. He played for the team from 1970 to 1975 and later served as a broadcaster and assistant coach before taking the helm in 1981. His achievements with the Lakers were a launching pad for a storied career that saw him coach the New York Knicks and later transform the Miami Heat into perennial contenders.

Despite his three-decade-long affiliation with the Heat, where he now serves as team president, Riley's Lakers roots run deep. Current Lakers coach JJ Redick expressed his admiration, stating, “He’s a legend in basketball, and this recognition is well-deserved. His impact on the Lakers and the NBA is immeasurable.”

Riley's statue will make him the eighth honoree in Star Plaza, joining other basketball luminaries and reinforcing the Lakers' tradition of celebrating those who shaped their legacy. The unveiling is set to attract fans and admirers of one of basketball’s most influential figures, ensuring Riley's contributions to the Lakers are remembered for generations to come.
