On Tuesday Boston Celtics announced that star guard Kristaps Porzingis will have surgery to repair his leg injury which happened to him during Game 2 of the NBA Finals against the Dallas Mavericks. Porzingis' distinct injuries include a torn retinaculum (stabilising tissue in the upper foot/ankle area) and dislocated posterior tibialis (lower leg muscle in the ankle area), both of which are regarded as unusual.

According to the Celtics, the specific ailments "always" require surgical treatment. Kristaps Porzingis had first attempted to postpone surgery until after the NBA Finals and Latvia's Olympic basketball campaign were completed.

During the NBA Finals series against the Dallas Mavericks, he suffered a “torn medial retinaculum allowing dislocation of the posterior tibialis tendon in his left leg”. Due to this, he was unable for Game three and four of the series. But in Game 5 he was on the bench and later played for 16 minutes of Game 5 in which Boston Celtics was able to beat Dallas Mavericks and win the 18th NBA title.

No timeline for his recovery

According to reports, Kristaps Porzingis will not be available for the Latvia team for the Paris Olympics 2024 qualifying tournament which is going to take place in July ahead of the main Olympics. However, it’s still unknown about his availability later in the Olympics if Latvia manages to qualify.

Boston Celtics released a statement about his injury, "The injury doesn’t allow for consistent play at the level required for Olympic competition. Surgery will be performed in the coming days, and further updates will be provided when available."

Meanwhile, Boston Celtics didn’t give any update on the surgery and when it will take place they only stated it will be "performed in the coming days." They also didn’t give any timeline for his recovery. As the Olympics are around the corner Kristaps Porzingis stated that it will take, a 'few months' for his recovery to take place, while he will be fully fit for the 2024/25 NBA season.
